TEACHING NOTES

Panic Room
Faith in the Storm

Phil 4:6 (NLT) “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.”

– Worry is unhelpful

– Worry is unreasonable

– Worry is unhealthy

Matt 8:23-24 (HCSB) As He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves.

1) The Storm = Unexpected problems
2) The Waves = Overwhelming circumstances
3) The Boat = Inadequate resources
4) Jesus Sleeping = Feelings of loneliness

Matt 8:25-27 (HCSB) “So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to die!’ But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, you of little faith?’ Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea. And there was a great calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?—even the winds and the sea obey Him!”

Faith is a decision not a feeling

SO WHAT DO WE DO?

1) Ask for help – Be willing to admit I can’t do it on my own

Phil 4:6-7 (NLT) “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

How strong is my faith?

2) Question our fears

Psalm 27:1 (MSG) – “Light, space, zest—that’s God! So, with him on my side I’m fearless, afraid of no one and nothing.”

3) Strengthen our faith

Matt 6:34 (MSG) – “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Psalm 23:1 (NLT) – “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.”

Real faith acts

Romans 8:28-32 (NIV) – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

Trusting in God is not based on the size of the storm…
but on the faith of the follower.
