? EXCUSE MY BEAUTY (Biblical STUMBLING BLOCK?!) | Romans 14 | Modesty Pt. 5

“Don’t be a stumbling block to your brother?” This scripture has been twisted more than a dish rag to tell the stronger to give up their Christian liberty. We’re going verse by verse through Romans 14 to see what this scripture ACTUALLY says and who it is directed toward.

On this episode of #CrackYourBible, we’re talking about Romans 14, specifically about who Romans 14:13 is directed toward. So often, Christians are told to forgo their Christian liberty to not cause a weaker brother to stumble, yet this is ALWAYS misapplied when it comes to the topic of modesty. Not only is Romans 14:13 not directed to the stronger brother, but both Romans 14 & 1 Corinthians 8 are specifically about things Christians DO have liberty to partake or refrain from, so long as their choice does not violate their own conscience. At no point is lusting after a woman something that a stronger Christian can do & it’s simply a matter of a weaker brother not understanding his freedom. It is for this reason that man-made teachings on modesty, beauty & attractiveness can NEVER be scripturally bolstered by Romans or 1 Corinthians.

✝️ From the Bible we know:
-The one who is stronger despised the one who abstains, while the one who is weaker judged the one who partakes. Romans 14:3
-The weaker brother is to stop judging a brother as sinful when God has already approved the behavior. Romans 14:1-4
-The weaker brother is welcomed into the fold, but not for the purpose of arguing with the stronger brothers. Romans 14:1
-Sold food is for strong believers, the mature, who have trained their powers of discernment. Hebrews 5:11-14
-A weaker Christian may or may not judge (in the Greek) all days as the same, or some more holy than others. Romans 14:5
-Whether you partake or abstain, you’re doing it to the Lord. Romans 14:5
-We all answer to Jesus, not each other. Romans 14:7-9
-The weaker brother is to stop judging the stronger brother, & the stronger brother is to stop despising the weaker brother. Romans 14:10-12
-The weaker brother is to not judge any longer & to stop putting a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. Romans 14:13
-To the weaker brother: nothing is unclean in itself. Romans 14:13-15
-Do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. Romans 14:15-16
-There is nothing new under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9
-The Kingdom of God is not about all these manmade things. Romans 14:17
-Anyone who serves Christ is acceptable to God. Romans 14:18
-Even though your conscience can be wrong, violating your conscience is sin. Romans 14:19-20
-Jesus Himself was a stumbling block to Jews and a folly to gentiles. 1 Corinthians 1:22-25
-It’s fine to partake and it’s fine to refrain, as long as you’re to causing your brother to choose between pleasing you and staying true to his conscience. Romans 14:20-21
-If you have doubts but still go ahead with the action, that’s sin, as it does not proceed from faith. Romans 14:23
-All people were created in the image of God. Genesis 1:27-31
-God shows Himself through His creation. Romans 1:18-20
-Nobody puts a lamp under a bushel. We’re to let our light shine. Matthew 5:14-16
-Man-made rules have an appearance of wisdom but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh. Colossians 2:18-23
